On Saturday, 7th December 2024, Weininger Irwin, Havering’s Unsung Hero of 2024, led a team of 27 rowers, most aged over 60, to compete in the British Rowing Indoor Championships (BRIC) at the NEC Birmingham. Accompanying them were two coachloads of enthusiastic supporters, cheering on these remarkable athletes.
The highlight of the day? Ms Hazel Parkins, at an inspiring 86 years old, broke the British Rowing Indoor Championship record for the 85-89 age group, beating the previous record by an astonishing 4 minutes!
And the triumphs didn’t stop there. Nine other individuals from Essex, all members of Cool Rowing’s and Ageless Teenagers, brought home medals, showcasing the strength and vitality of our community.

Weininger Irwin is the force behind ‘Cool Rowings’, an initiative in Romford that aims at improving physical and mental health through adaptive sports and rowing classes, particularly for underrepresented groups. Beyond this, Weininger supports numerous charitable causes, having raised thousands of pounds for Comic Relief and brought awareness to health issues such as prostate cancer and youth violence prevention.

Largest Chair Based Exercise Event in Redbridge 31st January 2025
The Windrush Day Grant Scheme supports groups to commemorate, celebrate and educate
people about the contribution of the Windrush generation and their descendants across
communities in our country. Funded projects will help people join together in celebrating the
arrival of the MV Empire Windrush.
The grant scheme forms a part of the Government’s commitment to level up opportunity
across diverse communities and help build greater trust in public services while improving
outcomes for everyone and forging a greater sense of belonging.
The response has been overwhelming and we have received 260+ applications requesting a
total of £6 million.
28 groups have received over £480,000 in funding for broad range of projects celebrating the
Windrush generation through community-led arts, educational and sporting events across
England. With £3.25 million awarded over the last six years, the Windrush Day Grant
Scheme continues to honour and highlight the legacy of the Windrush generation.
